Raul Torres, is a 30 years old Spanish entrepreneur. He is graduated in Biological Sciences from the University of Alicante and has Studies in Aerospace Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Valencia. At 24, Raul founded PLD Space, a Space Startup that aims to be the world leader in providing scientific and commercial access to space to small satellites. The company closed its first round of seed investment in 2013, with a 1 million Euro investment and with the participation of Business Angels and public institutions. In 2016, PLD Space closed a 6.7 million Euro series A round of investment with the participation of the multinational technology company GMV and two Spanish investment vehicles.
Currently works as CEO and launcher system engineer. In 2014 was recognized by the American Association Kairos Society as one of the 100 entrepreneurs under 30 years more influential in the world.
As co-founder of PLD Space achieved several technological milestones at Spain and Europe. In 2015 PLD Space developed from the ground up and tested the first reusable liquid rocket engine of Europe fully dedicated to boost small satellites industry.
In 2016, the Spanish Gobernment awarded PLD Space with a new R&D project called TEPREL of 1.4 million Euro, to upgrade for flight the company’s propulsion development. Also in 2016, the European Space Agency (ESA) approved to PLD Space the Future Launchers Preparatory Program (FLPP) to develop from the ground up all the necessary technologies and processes to make PLD Space´s launchers the first reusable launchers of Europe.
In late 2015 the Spanish Association of Science, honoured him for his achievements in the space propulsion field. Also in late 2015, the European Commission approved the SMILE project, where PLD Space provides liquid rocket engine testing services to the German Aerospace Center (DLR).
